The provisional programme for the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival 2011, has been released and entries to all the competitions, pageants and the parade have opened.
Re-launched under a new organising committee, and with a new Arts Festival added, Pink Loerie 2011 promises to be the best in the more than decade-long history of the festival.
Some of the main events have been released and below follows a short guide to this year’s Pink Loerie journey.
Pink Loerie Mardi Gras & Arts Festival 2011 in association with Southern Comfort: Shortened Programme:
Theme: “Celebrate Life!”

Venues: Swing Café & Zanzibar in Main Street.
Daily from 11 am – 3 pm:
Wednesday at 1 pm at Swing Café;

“Little Poof 2” by Bruce Little, the follow up to its sold-out predecessor, which needs no introduction. Bruce is back with some well-known characters like Mariska the reluctant Fag-hag and Thandawami Tokoloshe plus some new characters like Sakkie the sash queen and Lizaan the emo-lesbian;
“Divas” by our own Cape Town-based diva, René van Reenen, who appeared at the regional finals of Mr. Gay South Africa in 2010, with standards by Shirley Bassey, Barbara Streisand, Liza Manelli and even Madonna and more;
“DISCO” by SAMA-nominee Emile Minnie, a musical celebration of the dance floor divas, past and present. Emile Minnie, in glitter hot pants et al, takes you on a raucous trip through some of the best dance hits of the past 40 years. From Gloria Gaynor to Kylie Minogue, from Donna Summer to Britney Spears ;
“Kuifman” – the main feature – the worldwide premiere before it opens at KKNK: the one-man play “Kuifkop” written by Wim Vorster of Grahamstown Festival fame and infamy for his “Kruispad”, and directed by Kosie Smit of Mr. Gay South Africa™ 2010 Grand Finale and “Shirley Valentyn” fame with music by well-known composer and pianist, Dawid Boverhoff. After Defending the Caveman that has been translated into 36 languages, amongst which is Afrikaans, as Groet die Grotman, came pretty soon Defending the Cavewoman and Groet die Grotvrou. We even have a Groet die Grotoupa! Now, voila! Meet the ‘Kuifman’. (‘Kuif’ as in fringe). Kuifman is a middle aged gay man who shares his experiences, his embarrassments, his uphill battles and triumphs with the audience. The script is a potpourri of wit (naughty, hilarious or grim) and compassion with a good dose of drama.
